We are offering for sale a wonderful Christmas Gift, The Thomason Medallic Bible. It was first minted in 1830 by Sir Edward Thomason of Birmingham, England. The inspiration that first went into this creation is best described in Sir Edward's own words, as they appeared in his autobiography entitled Thomason's Memoirs During Half a Century.
It appeared to me, in 1827, that I might, through God's assistance, become a humble instrument to effect a unique and novel medallic work to further and promote the glory of God, by impressing the Word of God upon gold, silver and other indestructable metals, with emblematical and symbolical designs, and with a short condensed explanation on the reverse of the medals, and thereby be the first author of a Medallic Bible.'
Although years of effort were spent in engraving the dies for his Medallic Bible, Sir Edward apparently struck only a few sets, primarily for presentation to the monarchs of Europe and Asia. As a result, despite the fact that this extraordinary series of religious art medals is one of the greatest numismatic achievements of all time, most of these sets have remained secluded in royal collections and have never been exposed to the public.
This 1970 Franklin Mint version is not a copy or reproduction of the original, but a true re-creation from newly-engraved dies in a new size - 1 3/4" diameter. Except for the reduction in size, the scenes have not been changed. The typography, however, has been improved and newly selected Biblical quotations appear on the reverse of each medal.
This exquisite collection contains 60 medals and weighs an incredible 10 pounds. It measures 10 1/4" x 11 1/4" x 2" thick. It has five pages with 12 medals per page. Although some of the medals have taken on a somewhat milky appearance, others remain bright with the full luster they had the day they were minted. Sheer practicality prohibits us from providing a detailed view of each and every medal here. But we have tried to show extreme examples of both.
