California Gold Tokens were produced during 4 different time periods in America's history. It was during these early years, following the California Gold Rush, that the western part of America was very much isolated from the Eastern half of America. One consequence of this was that a standardized form of currency was almost non existent in these remote areas. To help alleviate this situation the U.S. Government granted private companies permission to strike gold coins. These fractional gold coins, known today as “California Gold Tokens”, were used as small change and struck from 1852 to 1882.

These fractional gold coins were either round or octangonal and have one of the following designs on their obverse: Liberty Head, Indian Head, or Roman Head. On the reverse was the depiction of a bear, and the words or symbols for quarter, half, and dollar, sometimes with “cents”, “dol”, “Doll”, or “Dollar”.

Remember, I do not buy and sell coins. When these are gone, they are gone forever.
