The saint-Gauden $20 Gold Double Eagle is often singled out as the most beautiful and well-crafted coin in United States history - and is the most desired coin among U.S. coin collectors. The 1909-S coin is particularly sought after, both for its distinctive characteristics and for its scarcity.

While all $20 gold coins are relatively scarce compared to other U.S. coins, recent studies have shown that the 1909-S gold coin is up to 40 times more rare than the commonly available 1924 gold coin struck at the Philadelphia Mint.

A foot note about quantities minted: In 1933 the minting of gold coins ceased when President Franklin D. Roosevelt recalled all gold in circulation and prohibited Americans from owning gold. And from the Whitman Red Book "It should also be emphaisized that quantities reported, particularly for gold and silver, cover the number of coins struck and have no reference to the quantity reaching actual circulation. Many issues were deposited in the treasury as backing for paper currency and were later melted." end quote.
