The 1997~S Botanic Garden 6~Coin Prestige Proof Set The Last In This Series
Purchase This Set for $474.95 plus shipping & insurance
Since 1983, the United States Mint has produced 13 Prestige Sets. The U.S. Botanic Garden Silver Dollar was the last of this special collector's series. Making this Prestige Set even more appealing is the incredibly low issuance of only 88,000 sets. Included with the United States Botanic Garden Proof Silver Dollar, this 1997 Prestige Set contains Proof versions of the 1997 circulating coins. These historic collectables were produced by the United States Mint and were specially designed and created to help fund the projects and missions of the United States Botanic Garden in Washington, D.C.
The Botanic Garden Commemorative Silver Dollar celebrates the vision of our founding fathers including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, realized when President James Monroe signed legislation in 1820 that led to the creation of what is now the oldest continually operating botanic garden in the nation. The coin's obverse design, by U.S. Mint Sculptor/Engraver Edgar Z. Steever, depicts the French facade of the U.S. Botanic Garden, and the reverse design, by U.S. Mint Sculptor/Engraver William C. Cousins, features a rose, America's national flower.
Except for the Commemorative Dollar, all the coins were struck in Proof condition at the San Francisco Assay Office. They have been produced using specially prepared dies and blanks to assure the highest quality, brilliant luster and magnificent detail, and they all bear the "S" mintmark. The set contains both regular coinage: the Lincoln cent, Jefferson nickel, Roosevelt dime, Washington quarter, Kennedy half dollar, and the commemorative silver dollar. The coins are encapsulated in a clear plastic two-sided personal display album that permit the coins to be visible from both obverse and reverse sides.
The outside album cover is plush forest green velvet and is embossed with a pewter design heraldic eagle emblem. The inside covers are white silk with the front inside cover being embossed in silver with a heraldic eagle and the words United States Mint 1997 Prestige Set. A red, white and blue ribbon bisects the lower left corner of the front inside cover. The presentation case is protected by a forest green cardboard box labeled United States Mint 1997 Prestige Set. This original packaging and the Certificates of Authenticity are all in mint pristine condition.
Again, I am able to offer the U.S. Mints "Sales Brochure depicting all of the Botanic Garden Commemorative Sets issued in 1997. This is a wonderful way to remember and add to the enjoyment of this historic period.
These Prestige Silver Proof Sets are No Longer Available... first issued in 1983 with the Olympic Coins Set, these were produced in limited quantities, ending in 1997 with the issuance of the Botanical Gardens Coins Set. The following is an excerpt from a press release issued by the U.S. Mint on August 12, 1997, and I quote:
MINT AUCTION OF SOLD-OUT SETS AT ANA CONVENTION INDICATES STRONG VALUES IN SECONDARY MARKET
Washington, D.C. -- The auction of four recently sold-out sets by the U.S. Mint during the American Numismatic Association's convention in New York City indicates a strong demand for new 1997 limited edition products in the secondary market. The sets were sold by silent auction on August 1 during the ANA's World's Fair of Money ...the 1997 Prestige Set, originally priced at $44, brought $222... end quote.
