The ancient art of shipbuilding meets 20th century technology in this exciting four-coin gold Proof set, featuring the world's first hologram coin! So, to pay tribute to the ships that have been so important in its own history - as well as the world at large - Gibraltar selected four important types of ships for its series of Gold Proof Coins: the British First Rate Warship (represented by the H.M.S. Victory), the Viking Long Ship, the Galleon (represented by the Golden Hind) and the Cog (Hansa Kogge).
World's first hologram coin - Appearing on the solitary sail of the Viking Long Ship is a sparkling diamond shaped hologram, reflecting all the colors of the spectrum. This particular ship chosen to bear the hologram because of the Viking's importance as the first world traders... and the nature of the sail itself. Viking Long Ships had one large, two-colored rectangular sail, typically emblazoned with a striped or diamond pattern. The lines of the pattern were probably reinforcing strips stitched to the sails for strength. That brilliant pattern of diamonds on the large sail is captured on this legal tender coin issued by Gibrlatar.
About Pobjoy - Like the explorers of old — who made their way through uncharted waters — the Pobjoy Mint is a modern-day explorer, constantly in search of new ways to create spectacular coins. In 1990, they developed their "pearl black" finish for the unique "penny-black" gold and silver Proof coins. In 1995, they were the first mint in the world to strike gold and platinum bi-metal coins. And in 1996, they introduced the world's first hologram coin. Clearly, the age of exploration — begun by the seafarers of ancient times — is far from finished.
