In 1974 the Government of Jamaica issued the first in an annual series of ten-dollar coins commemorating the people, places and events of major importance in Jamaica's history.
This Proof-quality coin measures and impressive 45mm (1 3/4 inches) in diameter and contains 650 grains of sterling silver. It was minted in limited edition by The Franklin Mint under the authorization of the Government of Jamaica and will never be issued again.
The obverse of the 1974 ten-dollar coin pays tribute to Sir Henry Morgan, who was knighted by King Charles II of England exactly 300 years prior to this minting — in 1674 — and appointed lieutenant governor of Jamaica in appreciation for his many victories over the
Spaniards. The reverse of the ten-dollar coin bears the Jamaican coat of arms. The central feature of these arms is a shield bearing a cross on which are superimposed five pineapples—one of the most important products of Jamaican agriculture.
