A 1997 £250 Gold Proof coin for Sierra Leone is the world's first legal tender Proof Coin with a 6 pt. brilliant cut diamond inset. Struck by the Pobjoy Mint it was a one-year-only issue. A report, released in 2001, named collector John McNamee as the lucky winner that purchased a $250 gold coin from an auction house in New York City. The entire issue of these gold proofs with diamonds was reported to have been sold to a single purchaser, McNamee said, and never offered to the public.
According to the 2005 STANDARD CATALOG OF WORLD COINS 32nd EDITION catalog by Chester L Krause and Clifford Mishler, page 1861, and I quote; “This denomination (the 1997 $250.00) was never offered to the public. The entire issue is reported to have been commissioned by and sold to a single purchaser.” end quote.

The reverse of this gold coin features Queen Victoria with a .06-carat diamond brooch on her dress. The obverse shows the national arms of Sierra Leone. The coin is listed as KM-240, weighs 15.55 grams and contains .4999 ounces of .9999 fine gold. It has a reeded edge and a diameter of 29.9mm.
