A little history: Following the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, the Pacific became a major battleground in World War II. By early 1942, the Japanese conquered Singapore and forced General Douglas MacArthur to withdraw from the Philippines. The future did not look good for the Allies in the Pacific until the tide began to turn with crucial developments in the Solomon Islands.

The first battle for control of the Pacific was the Battle of the Coral Sea (May 4-8, 1942.The Allied forces won a famous victory which gave support and emotional encouragement to troops throughout the Pacific.

The Battle for Guadalcanal zoom in - which took place from August 1942 through February 1943 - proved to be the most decisive event in the South Pacific and turned the entire war in the Allies favor. The American victory at Guadalcanal was perhaps the single most important event in the War in the Pacific. It paved the way for other great victories and gave the free world renewed hope in the struggle against tyranny. As you may know, Guadalcanal is the largest of the Solomon Islands in the southwestern Pacific, so these coins will always be in demand for their special importance.

Towards the end of 1942, Admiral William "Bill" Halsey took control of the forces in the South Pacific and was determined to keep Guadalcanal out of Japanese hands. Following a series of dramatic sea battles in which both sides tried to land reinforcements, Halsey eventually gained the upper hand. He was able to send fresh American forces to the island and stop the Japanese from sending the reinforcements they so desperately needed. In addition to attacks from the air and battles on the ground, bitter fighting took place in the jungle. Malaria and other tropical diseases also took their toll, making life unbearable.
